Nash Farm Volunteers

Nash Farm allows volunteers to work in an area that best exhibits their personal interest and skills. The goal of this program is to unite volunteers with a position they will excel, thereby promoting “A Labor of Love.”

Domestic farmhands, under the supervision of the Nash Farm Manager, greet visitors and lead tours to help visitors connect with the family history and domestic practices of the 1800s. These may include scheduled groups and self-guided tours. They answer questions and interpret the Nash Farmhouse. They also help visitors understand the rural and domestic practices of the 1800s. Domestic farmhands may give programs concerning chores, gardening and heritage toys, among other topics. Training includes instruction in interpretive techniques and tips for each session. These farmhands may also be domestic crafts people that help maintain Nash Farm furnishings and recreate historical everyday items of the 1800s to be used as part of living history exhibits at Nash Farm.

Agriculture farmhands, under the supervision of the Nash Farm Manager, provide care for the animals at Nash Farm. Duties include feeding and cleaning of the animals, their stalls and areas. Agricultural farmhands will participate in leading tours of all equipment and agricultural buildings or areas. Agriculture farmhands help to plan the crops and garden for the year, cultivate, plant, maintain and harvest the yields of the gardens/crops. These farmhands may be skilled carpenters or trades people that help maintain Nash Farm structures or equipment. They work recreate historical everyday items of the 1800s to be used as part of living history exhibits at Nash Farm. These farmhands may also assist with tours.

Special Activity farmhands may be called to manage the facility during parties, wedding receptions, photo shoots or other special rental activities. The main goal would be supervision of the site and the group renting the site for the period of time agreed upon in the rental contract. These farmhands may also assist staff with various office tasks such as, but not limited to: monthly mailings; preparing supplies for events; group visits; data entry; filing and general office support. Additionally, these farmhands may assist with setting up the site for special activities and programs.

Tractor Drivers will provide tractor drawn wagon rides during events and may also perform the duties of other agriculture farmhands when scheduled.

You, your family and friends can preserve our heritage by interpreting and sharing in the farm activities the way the many settlers did on the Grape Vine Prairie. Each farmhand must attend the necessary training. Shifts are based on an as needed basis and approved by the Nash Farm Manager. All farmhands must either dress in period costume or wear approved Nash Farm attire.
